Aicon Contemporary is pleased to present puer prima, the debut New York solo exhibition by Los Angeles–based artist Alia Shawkat. The exhibition brings together works created over the past five years in Shawkat’s Highland Park studio, marking her most introspective and expansive body of work to date.
The title puer prima translates to “first boy”, the eternal child. Drawing from Jung’s concept of the puer aeternus, Shawkat explores the creative self that remains forever young, brimming with instinct, disorder, intoxication, and whimsy. Across large-scale drawings and richly layered paintings, Shawkat’s practice investigates the psychic terrain of imagination, intuition, and memory.
